The built environment in the Noosaville precinct has undergone a huge shift in recent years. Many older, simpler, lightweight buildings that were so familiar within the area have disappeared, making way for larger multi-residential buildings and poorly considered duplex dwellings. Here was an opportunity to create a more sympathetic house to the local area. The building is intriguing from the street, yet private for the occupants with its U shape configuration providing an internal green court and the absence of a large fence to the street.
The brief was remarkably open, functional requirements were explained, as was the request for a separate one bedroom studio the owners could have guests reside in. This was to have it’s own separate entry. The upper level which faces north takes advantage of views looking over the studio. Hand operated screens were developed with a local yachtsman. The ground level, and interior court were raised to future proof the building from flooding.
In terms of sustainability, this can be looked at in 2 ways, the first is the building is made to last. It will get better with time and not be knocked over in 20 years as many houses are in Noosa, secondly just for the pure health of the owners. They are at retirement age and have gained a huge lift in terms of their lifestyle building a house custom made for themselves. It’s a very rewarding part of any project that is seen by all relevant parties as a success.
